BRIEF HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT
The Department of Political Science was opened in 2013/2014 Academic Session together with other departments that pioneered the establishment of the University on the 28th of October, 2013. It started with 78 students trained through the pre- degree programme of the University (School of Developmental Studies). In 2014/2015 Academic Session, the Department admitted a total number of 86 students through Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and School of Developmental Studies. In 2015/2016 academic session; the Department admitted a total number of 101 students were admitted, while in the present 2016/2017 academic session;a number of 148 candidates were admitted. Making the total number of students to stand at 357. However, the programme commenced with adequate staffing drawn from tenure, Sabbatical and Visiting appointments from neighbouring Universities.
DEPARTMENTAL PHILOSOPHY
The philosophy and mission of Political Science discipline is to produce graduates with a critical mind, requisite ability and skill to analyse, comprehend, predict and influence the factors that shape and mould power relationships in an ever-changing socio-political environment in a globalizing world.
OBJECTIVES OF THE PROGRAMME
The main objectives of a degree in Political Science are:
ADMISSION
There are two levels of admission into the Political Science Programme. These are UTME andDirect Entry.
Candidates for admission into the four year degree programme should possess a Senior Secondary School Certificate or General Certificate of Education NECO or their equivalents with at least five Credit passes obtained in not more than two sittings of which three must be Government or History plus English Language and Mathematics. An acceptable UTME score is also required.
b. Direct Entry
Candidates for Direct Entry into the degree programme in Political Science should possess five credit passes in the General Certificate of Education NECO, Senior Secondary School Certificate or their equivalents, three of which shall include Government or History, English Language and Mathematics; In addition, candidates must possess credit passes in three relevant subjects at the advanced level in the General Certificate of Education or its equivalent.
